A responding variable is a condition that can change as the result of another variable's alteration. It can also be referred to as an effect or a dependent variable. In scientific study you might want to know how one condition changes based on another condition. For example, in the graph on the left, the responding variable was how many berries would get eaten. The condition that was changed was with or without thorns. In the example below, the baby was the responding variable - with or without a bottle, crying or happy.
Independent or manipulated variable - this is the variable in an experiment that is changed to see if there is a result. In the graph on the left, the manipulated variable is thorns. Below the manipulated variable is the bottle.
